Sacramento River
&
American River

Sacramento is a great place for boating, and I have chatted with many folks who did not realize how big the boating community is here in the Capital City.

We have the Sacramento and the American Rivers coming together just above the downtown area.   There are places to stop and visit such as Old Town Sacramento and more restaurants a little further up the river.

While you can throw a hook out just about anywhere, most of the social boating takes place on the American River.  That’s because the river is restricted to 5 knots, so you’re less likely to be waked.

Most of the larger boats raft up about a mile up the American River.  Some folks like to raft up in the middle of the river and some like to stern into the shore.  You can quickly see which groups are the party groups, and which groups like to kick back and remember their weekend.  I am not in the second group.

Everyone is very friendly and usually welcome folks who want to join in the raft up.  It is a great way to socialize, hopping from one boat to another, and there always seems to be someone who will ensure your hand does not have an empty drink.  Of course it seems everyone has horderves to bring out throughout the day, not to mention fantastic meals.  No one ever seems to go hungry!

Over the last few years many of the ski boaters have started rafting on the American River not to far up from the Sacramento and American River confluence.  They do some impressive raft ups with all the mayhem that 6,000 watt speakers blasting on every boat, a much younger crowd and of course boat drinks bring.  It’s great to watch the show and be well entertained.  Of course you can join in if you dare!

Of course anytime you’re boating in a new environment it is best to talk with local folks about things to do, as well as obstacles and shallow water.  You are always welcome to contact the Boaterguy, I love emails.
